August 13, 2021, Madison, FL –Madison County Memorial Hospital (MCMH) informed local Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Madison County Office of Emergency Management (MCOEC) that its emergency room would be going on temporary diversion effective August 13, 2021.  This Diversion is a temporary countermeasure that hospitals can activate to minimize the number of critical care patients a hospital can take care of.   Although the hospital’s emergency room is still able to provide care to walk-in patients during an ambulance diversion, while experiencing an unusually high number of critical care patients, the number allowed to be received by ambulance is limited.  The hospital has temporarily stopped accepting EMS patients due in part to an increase in coronavirus patients at Madison County Memorial Hospital and across the region.

“Due to the high volume of inpatient census and a large number of emergency room patients requiring inpatient care, this afternoon, our management team and medical staff made the decision to go on temporary diversion,” said Tammy Stevens, Chief Executive Officer at Madison County Memorial Hospital. “This temporary strategy will aid us in the reallocation of staff resources to manage our current census while maintaining a high level of care for our patients.”

We appreciate the collaboration of our local EMS teams, EOC, the Department of Health-Madison, and area providers who are helping to accommodate patients during this brief time. “Our staff has been very responsive in picking up extra hours or coming in on their normal day off”, said Brittany Selph, Chief Nursing Officer.  “Likewise, we have been identifying new candidates so that we can hire additional nurses.”  If you or someone you know might be interested in joining MCMH go to mcmh.us/careers to apply.
